Boss Series - The Lawyer

On the fourth episode of Boss series we interviewed Kima Otung. Kima left her job at a prestigious law firm to become an independent consultant. With only two years’ experience as a qualified lawyer, many thought that Kima would fail. Now, Kima has a range of clients including Microsoft. Kima is also a musician and a property entrepreneur.

Who did you look up to growing up?

Kima loves Beyoncé! She also looks up to her mother and admires how she managed to raise five children who are all within similar age group. Beyoncé and Kima’s mum have an amazing work ethic and Kima tries to emulate their standard!

Why choose a career in Law?

Kima researched the highest paying jobs and law was one of the top most desirable jobs. Also, the fact that her older sister became a lawyer added some motivation. Finally, ‘Legally Blonde’ is one of Kima’s favourite films.

How did you become a lawyer?

Whilst studying at university Kima was mentored by an older student who offered to help & guide her. To get her training contract, Kima used organisations such as SEO and Rare Recruitment which help place minority students in law firms.

How do you get people to like you/how do you win favour?

Kima stated that it is important to research people before reaching out and to complement their achievements. Social media sites not only give access to top professionals but also provide information that can be a conversation starter.

What’s the culture like in a law firm?

Kima noted that aspiring solicitors should expect to work long hours sometimes till the early hours in the morning. There is a demand for excellence so you need to have attention to detail. There is a heavy drinking culture which a Christian can find difficult to adopt.

How did you secure your first client as an independent solicitor?

Kima’s value proposition is simple. Her clients get exceptional quality of work at a better price. Kima is also more agile than large law firms. Kima uses agencies to secure new clients which helps her focus on delivering services.

How do you retain clients?

Kima stated that every client provides a grace period where you are allowed to ask many questions and make mistake. However, it is important to do your own research to get up to speed. Also pitch your questions to the right people. Not every question needs to be asked the CEO.
